Blog 22: Independent Component 2

A) I, Jordan Partida, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 1/2 hours of work.

B) In my interview with Linda Bicessi she told me that directing can help an actor understand the entire theater process and how everything needs to happen. An actor should understand all aspects of theater. 

D) For my Independent Component two I have written my own play which I am now directing. Jenelle Huck is my stage manager. My actors are:

I wrote a script based on the 5 stages of grief. The play is called The 5 Stages. there are 5 scenes each with two actors on a park bench. In each scene one or both characters are experiencing one of the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. I plan on showing the show in Mid May. Any one is invited to come see it. It will take place on the stage in the MPR (duh right, wrong.) They reason i say on the stage is because the audience will be on the stage with the actors in what is called a "black box."

E) I felt that directing a show might help me understand, as an actor, what is expected of me from my director. After directing Annie I wanted to try something more stationary. There is not singing in this show only acting. I want to pull the real emotion out of my actors and get them to the place where the audience feels what they feel. This is relevant because that's what I want to do as an actor. I want my audience to feel what I am feeling. 

F) My EQ asks how a thespian can provide a believable performance and my answer two is by utilizing the skills of a director. The director has an interesting perspective of the show because s/he is not only a part of the process but is also a continuous audience member. They know what the audience will react to. The actor is on stage trying things out saying their lines in different ways and the director chooses which one the audience will react to the best. The actor. director relationship is very important and if and actor learns to speak director than their communication will be a lot smoother.

• I have casted and directed the song NYC from Annie to take to Fullerton Festival in March. NYC is about 5 minutes long and we have focused on harmony's, choreography and costumes because these are all the things that the judges at Fullerton will be looking at. Our rehearsals have been every Tuesday and Thursday from 3-4pm since November 20th. There have been a couple hick-ups along the way, having two people drop out and adding two people and myself to the production due to lack of cast. The number is now completely choreographed but is not completely competition ready. I will continue working with this production until Fullerton festival on March 18th and 19th. I presume approximately 15 more hours will be put into this production.
• Interpretive 
• My project is theater and Musical theater is just theater on steroids. It is more intense because it is not only acting but acting while singing and dancing. Singing while doing the intense choreography takes a lot of practice which is why we dedicate two days a week for rehearsals. Our original number was sloppy and we were our of breath by the end but now there has been so much improvement with the cast. Our movements are sharp and precise. Every second or rehearsal is spend working hard and doing what needs to be done. We have been working on this number for 4 months now and we plan to spend the next two months doing the exact same thing hoping to make finals at Fullerton this year.
• Applied 
• A theater production is a difficult process and nothing has made me realize this more than Annie. Being in charge and directing something so intricate has proven to be a big challenge for me. I have discovered that being a director has made me a better actress because it has allowed me to look at theater from a different perspective. I now recognize that in order to become a good performer you have to understand all aspects of theater which will be my answer two. When I had two people leave my production I had to not only replace them but step in and join the cast which gave me a different perspective. Watching Christine Cummings (mentor) direct the show "NO Exit" really helped my directing Annie. I needed to have a positive relationship with all my actors and listen to their needs and establish a strong communication ability with them. Overall this component has really opened up my eyes to big picture of what really goes into a production.

Blog 8: Independent Component 1 Proposal

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.

My IC 1 will be directing the Musical Theater submission for Fullerton Festival this year. I will pick the Musical we are doing, including the songs we will be preforming. I will hold auditions and cast the play. Once everything is set I plan on holding rehearsals twice a week for 1 hr to 1hr 30 min each. The final product will preforming at fullerton college. We hope to place with year. If we don't it will still be ok, we go to Fullerton to showcase our talents and if we are recognized by judges that would be amazing.  

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.

I can make a video log of auditions and rehearsals and of course the final show. We will be performing the show at Ipoly during our Fullerton Pre-show that we do every year.  

3.  Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.

I have always been in shows but I have never directed the WHOLE show. What I hope to gain from this component is a larger understanding of the art of theater. My project as a whole is on all performing arts but in my research I am looking into depth on each type and this would be broadening my knowledge on the subject of theater and MORE specifically musical theater so i will also be musically directing this show combining the two arts.
